Tips for Successful Moving Day Planning

Posted on November 12th, 2011

The key to a low stress move is to plan ahead. This begins with sorting through all your belongings and either throwing away, giving away or selling anything that you don’t ever actually use, or that you don’t like. Remember that it costs money to move and the more stuff you have, the more money it costs. It makes no sense to pay to move things you don’t even really want.

When you start packing, it’s important to use high quality cardboard moving boxes. They’ll be the right size and shape for your packing needs, and strong enough not to break on you. Begin with packing things you that you don’t currently need—holiday dishes and decorations, off-season clothes, specialized equipment, et cetera. Mark everything carefully with a marker, including a brief description of the contents and room designation. These sort of boxes should be the first ones on the truck or into storage, because they will also be the last ones out.

About a month before your move, start contacting local moving companies to get quotes. These should be made in person, after a representative has looked over your household. Hire someone who offers insurance to cover any damage and who has experience moving in your particular area.

Pack your dishes and breakables in low acid, ink free paper such as you can get from a packing supply store. Newspaper is easy to obtain, but it leaves ink on your fingers and can leave it on your belongings too. Think about the things you’ll need immediate access to—linens, toiletries, your coffee maker. Pack those last and mark the boxes clearly so that you can find them later. Set aside items like jewelry and cash boxes to carry personally. If you start early and work logically, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress as moving day approaches.
