Moving In: Portland

After looking at 10 houses in Glastonbury, Steve and Sharon Kirsche thought they found what they were looking for.
“The inspection process was a real eye-opener, and it turned out to be a disaster,” Steve Kirsche said. With a tree growing in the septic tank, termites and other problems surfacing, the couple walked away from the deal.
Disappointed, the Kirsches, who were living in a 1,750-square-foot home in Wethersfield, continued their search for a larger home .
“We wanted a place we could settle in for the next 20 years and raise a family,” said Steve Kirsche, 33, a development officer at Yale University in New Haven. Sharon Kirsche, 29, a research assistant in occupational health at the Yale School of Medicine, agreed, adding that they also wanted to be close to their families and to Route 9 and I-91 for their commute to work.

With all that in mind, their real estate agent, Enza Dandeneau of Prudential Connecticut Realty in Glastonbury, helped them find a newer home, built in 2002, in Portland.
“They didn’t have the time to deal with any kind of fixer-upper,” Dandeneau said. The Colonial was in move-in condition, with updates, including Brazilian chestnut floors on the second floor and granite countertops in the kitchen. “It’s got nice, spacious rooms and great sunlight, “she said.
The Kirsches closed on the house Dec. 29 and moved in on Jan. 2.
Sharon Kirsche, who loves to cook, said the way the family room opens to the kitchen makes entertaining more fun for her. “People kind of hang out with me while I’m cooking. I’m not as isolated,” she said.
The Kirsches also like the family-oriented neighborhood, which has both a suburban and rural feel to it, and the privacy of their wooded yard. Being close to shopping in Glastonbury and Middletown is a plus, too, they said.
There is only one drawback to owning a larger home, said Sharon Kirsche: “There is a lot more cleaning to do.”
